FOOD

as i was buying chicken i saw on the back side saying preservatives used but it dint showed what kind of preservatives was being used.and then i began researching on food preservatives.

Food preservation is the process of treating and handling food to stop or slow down spoilage (loss of quality, edibility or longer value value) and thus allow for longer storage.

Preservation usually involves preventing the growth of bacterica, fungi , and other microorganism (although some methods work by introducing benign bacteria, or fungi to the food), as well as retarding the oxidation of fats which cause rancidity. Food preservation can also include processes which inhibit visual deterioration that can occur during food preparation; such as the enzymatic reaction in apples after they are cut.

Why should I be aware of this?

We are getting more and more distanced from the source of our food. Now food not only has to travel farther and farther but, for this very reason also needs to be stored longer. To keep this food from going bad new preservative methods have evolved without which bread would get mouldy, and salad oil would go rancid before it’s used up. Moulds growing on decaying food have caused many epidemics in many parts of the world.

after researching i came to know that they use a lot of ammonia to preserve meat. and the original chicken came from the mexico.

it was grown and rain in a factory farm. chicken were vaccinated there to control disease.

food preservation provide health benifits because it preserve nutrients. but the way a lot of chemicals are used in the food made me doubt if they really provide any health benifit. i dont thing eating ammonia is benificial for the body.

How does this affect me

Chemical preservatives are harmful because our body’s digestive system doesn’t know what to do with the stuff preservatives are made of and will either eliminate it or store it somewhere. And when it reacts in our body we suffer the consequences with illness.

Preservatives are subject of endless debate among academics and food science and toxicology specialists. It is argued that most products contain preservatives in minute dozes and, therefore, can’t kill.

it is grown is a big farm. it covers a lot of land. a lot of pesticides are sprayed in that area to prevent disease. which cause the grass or the land biodiversity disturbance. it will lead to a environmental degradation.

it was grown by small farmers in mexico and then they importo usa factory. and the major profit is made by the usa factory rather than mexico farmers.

all about environmeltal science

there are so many things we dont know thats why we dont do it. and there are many things we know thats why we do it. and there are much more things we know and we dont want to do it. from this class i came to know that we( all human beings and the activities) are the creator of the environmental hazard which is causing problems to us and the animals and the mother earth.

i thing  global warming is an important issue in this century. it is causing problem to many people and wildlife and the biodiversity. we know the causes and we know the solution too. so we all human beings should be togather to work on this problem so that we can make a change and save life of the eath and animals and we people.

alternative energy info

in Indiana states the alternative source of energy are wind farm, and the solar panel, which ware helping the people of the Indiana to pay less bills for their electricity. if you’re thinking all this alternative energy seems uncharacteristically progressive for a place like Indiana, you need to get with the times. Wind power has become a big business, and the wind doesn’t blow only in blue states.

Wind energy is one of the most cost-effective renewable energy resources, which is vastly and widely being adopted, especially on a mass scale to be a power generation source. By the mid of 2009, no less than 80 countries were using wind energy on a commercial level.

Unlike conventional fossil fuel power plants, windmills don’t emit any greenhouse gasses and even if they are removed they don’t leave any sort of pollution behind.

Off shore wind farms and those set up at higher altitudes which produce more energy can return the investment in as little as three months, which is why they are becoming more and more popular, especially at homes.

and i thing why there is no wind farms in chicago? this is a windy city so i thing government should take advantage of this natural gift of this city . but while i was researching this issue i found out that windfarms is coming in chicago too pretty soon(zack christmas, NBC chicago).

water

An unsafe water source in Tamale, Ghana.

Water, Earth’s most precious resource, serves simultaneously as habitat, nourishment and cleanser.
Underground aquifers, dozens of miles deep and hundreds of miles wide, are the Earth’s second-largest reserve of fresh water, after ice caps and glaciers. Filled over billions of years, they are today being drained at two to four times their natural recharge rate.

We take it for granted, we waste it, and we even pay too much to drink it from little plastic bottles.

And still, today, nearly 1 billion people in the developing world don’t have access to it.

Clean, safe drinking water is scarce. It is the foundation of life, a basic human need. Yet today, all around the world, far too many people spend their entire day searching for it.

The importance of access to clean water cannot be overstated.

The Department of Water Management is responsible for delivering close to 1 billion gallons of fresh pure water to the residents of Chicago and 125 suburban communities everyday. it is also responsible for removing the waste water and storm runoff from the streets of Chicago, via our sewer system and delivering the effluent for treatment to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. This is all accomplished through a network of purification plants, tunnels, pumping stations, water mains, sewer mains, valves and structures that require constant upkeep and maintenance.

living in the post industrial country, and getting water facilities in a minimal rate, we barely know how much water we are wasting in a day. but after monitoring the water use in my day to day life, for e.g, how much i use while bathing, in shower, brushing and so on, i use approximately 199 gallons in a days, 1393 gallons in a week and 78008 gallons in a year. of course i need water to survive so do all living beings. but my in my daily activities i waste a lot of water unecessarrly and i believe many people do( not every one).

when i brush or take a shower or wash my face i turn the flow of water go on until i m done with my all the activities. this aspect of mine misusing the water might not harm me. but there is only 0.2 percent of total drinking water, many kids are dying of water disease and not having a clean drinking water. if i control my habits and many people who are like me did the same it might be very helpful not to waste the water.

trees and the environment

picture of tulsi plant

what trees have to do with the environment?

We like trees around us because they make life more pleasant. Most of us respond to the presence of trees beyond simply observing their beauty. We feel serene, peaceful, restful, and tranquil in a grove of trees. We are “at home” there. Hospital patients have been shown to recover from surgery more quickly when their hospital room offered a view of trees. The strong ties between people and trees are most evident in the resistance of community residents to removing trees to widen streets. Or we note the heroic efforts of individuals and organizations to save particularly large or historic trees in a community.

The stature, strength, and endurance of trees give them a cathedral-like quality. Because of their potential for long life, trees frequently are planted as living memorials. We often become personally attached to trees that we or those we love have planted.

tulsi, which is Sanskrit for holy basil, is a medicinal herb that has been a part of the Ayurvedic tradition for centuries, according to Medicinal Herb Info. Tulsi is often recommended for the treatment of fever, cough and the common cold, and contains antispasmodic and antibacterial properties. Before you begin to use tulsi medicinally, seek the advice of our health care provider. ulsi is considered to be an adaptogenic herb, which means that it helps the body counteract the effects of stress. It acts to prevent the overproduction of stress-induced corticosterone, dopamine, and serotonin.

ulsi has been studied for its ability to protect the stomach against ulcers and heal existing ulcers. The suspected reason for the effect is its antioxidant properties and its ability to inhibit lipoxygenase production.

it is a herb. its leaves are small and almosr round. its a flowering plant. its stem is very small and is branches ito many branches. and it is considered that it gives odd a lot of oxygen and absorbed lot of carbon dioxide.

ulsi or tulasi is a sacred plant for Hindus. Water mixed with tulsi petals is given to the dying to raise their departing

souls to heaven.n. Tulsi, which is Sanskrit for “the incomparable one”, is worshipped throughout India, most often regarded as a consort of Krishna in the form of laxmi.

i think a wild life is not affected if there is no tulsi. but this plant is a medical herbal as well as the holy pant in Hindu religion. most of the Hindus plant this tree in their garden or in front of the house. this plant is good for health as a medicine and if planted in front of the house or somewhere around it is good scientifically too. if all the trees of holy basil is cut and thrown away of course it will affect the environment. because of this plant we get much oxygen and this is a medical herbal too, it will affect if we dont have this plant at all in the world.

population and the world

from my environmental science i got a chance to know that we r using the resource and our earth at the rate of 1.3. it does mean that we are using 1 and the half earth. over population is not causing only a problem to our resources but aslo to many factor. such as:

1. over population is leading to environmental problems

2. expotential population growth and develpoment leads to faster deplition of resources

3. population grows expotentially

4. pollution

now the issue is how to control the existing population. there are many and many methods of controlling the population. educating people, awareness programme, contraceptives etcs

in my openion i think there are adeduate methods of contraceptives. people should know about the contraceptives and start using them if they dont want babies. in my openion people should think twice for having babies if the economic status of the individuals is weaker.

i think abortion and contraceptives are two different things. one contrls not to have conception and another is if something happens in life and baby is cusing problem or mother dont want to have that  child for some reason she can abort the child.

teenages should have free access of certain contraceptive like condoms and birth contrlling pill. it help to control the population as well as to continue teenagers life in a environment so that they can continue their education without any barriers. and government should consider this situation and make a flexible law for this situation.

nothing is impossible. but our country is a demacratic and a capitalist country. noone can poke to anybodys personal affair and life to do something. but i think this is an global issue. if the huge priority is given and incentives to the population of the united states than could work.

the control of population by controlling the immirants and illigal people of the united nation sounds very political to me. but if the visas rated is dropped to zero and all the illigal immigrants are deported than of course there will be a significant change in the population of the united nation. but i dnt belive that the action of population control with this kind of action will be appropriate.

some country use involuntary population control methos too. i learn these things from one of my classmate. she told us that government mixed some kinds of chemical in the public drinking water which prevent from man and woman to have a conception.  in china forced abortion is practiced. but these things dont work in all the world and a postindustrialised country like united states.

population growth and the resource use, and pollution are directly propertional. high population high resource use. and high pollution. economy is directly affected by the population growth. because more resource is used of the nation. and deplition of the resource. it affects the ecomony of the family too. it drives them poorer and poorer. this this the main problem of the developing country that is poverty.

genetic engineering

genetic engineering is the scientific alteration of the structure of the genetic material in a living organisms. it involves the production and use of recombinant DNA and has been employed to create an bacteria that synthesize insulin and other human proteins.

I think genetic engineering a good thing because by the help of genetic engineering first human  insulin is developed for the diabetic patient. it has enabled the pharmaceutical company to make such drugs which fights against the disease efficiently.because of genetic engineering a lots of food production is being done and which has helped a lot of people from the world to purchase food for less price which is helping to eradicate hunger from the world.

  • Nature is an extremely complex inter-related chain consisting of many species linked in the food chain. Some scientists believe that introducing genetically modified genes may have an irreversible effect with consequences yet unknown.
  • Genetic engineering borderlines on many moral issues, particularly involving religion, which questions whether man has the right to manipulate the laws and course of nature.
i really dont worry eating genetically modified food at all. but i aprriciate eating organic food too.
genetically modified food will though harm the ecosystem of that particular area which iss one of the disadvantage of the genetic engineering. because of the new technique the fertility of the land will decrease and they have to use more chemicals and other technique. and those organisms which are responsible to make the land fertile for an example earthworm will die because the chemicals and the different plants which will affect the ecosystem.
genetic engineering is a part of a science which is from the human mind and the god is a metaphysical beliefs. so i this science and the god(metaphysical belief) do have no dycotomy. so its not playing as a god.
science and the experimentation of the new invention should be promoted by the government. if there had been any control we would have been still wondering if the moon is hot or cold. there should be a promotion and the boost should be given to the new scientific research.

green east west university

my university is in a sustainable environment. Because right across the university there is a park and many kind of tree and flowers are bloomed. toilets and bathroom are always clean. Once there was a complain about the sanitation and cleanliness from the students, after that maintainance team is more concern in cleanliness. library and computer labs are not that big. but the students population and the facility is pretty OK.  we don’t have transportation facility of theuniversity but they issue all the full time students U-pass and the trains and the bus are available a the school area. it easy to get the train and buses.

this university is sustainable and green because of its surrounding and the progress it is doing day by day. they have tarted for a new building to make a bigger university in which more than 600 credits will be offered. and many and much more facility to the students will be provided. so i think the greenery of this university is it surrounding and its progress.

there are many university and campus around our university. our university is the only cost effective university in the surrounding. there is Roosevelt, Columbia and other campus and university. all of them are very well known and popular university. we are in a same environment and our interaction to the surrounding might be different but the impacts of the environment is the same.

to improve the campus first we should improve our lab and the library. we student needed a bigger library and many book. and the availability of computers should be more. and the availability of the classes should me more because some student have to wait for one class for a whole year.

all about me

Hi everybody my name is Bandana. i was born and raised in nepal. i currently live in Chicago, Illinois.

I m very much concern in the environment. i love to know how nature works and the relation between humans and environment. i think that mother nature is our friend and we should know and preserve and protect our nature.

I m pursuing a career in nursing.  i wanted to work in a sector that i can help people and sever them.

How can we preserve our environment we live in?

i love literature. i love to read books especially classic. My favorite writers are Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, Ernest Hemingway, Dan Brown, Ray Bradbury.  i spend my leisure time reading books. literature and classic books makes me wonder how people can write such a good book and i cant. i tried to write one time but i couldn’t(i dint tried to write a book though).

language

Hemingway uses the archaic ”thou” to parallel the Spanish ”tu” and usteds form. additionally most of the dialogue in this novel is an direct translation from Spanish, producing an often strained English equivalent. Hemingway referenced the foul language with unprintable ”obscenity” in the dialogue, although foul language is used freely in Spanish even when its equivalent is censored in English. the Spanish expression repeatedly recurs throughout the novel, translated by Hemingway as ”i obscenity in the milk.”
