language

Hemingway uses the archaic ”thou” to parallel the Spanish ”tu” and usteds form. additionally most of the dialogue in this novel is an direct translation from Spanish, producing an often strained English equivalent. Hemingway referenced the foul language with unprintable ”obscenity” in the dialogue, although foul language is used freely in Spanish even when its equivalent is censored in English. the Spanish expression repeatedly recurs throughout the novel, translated by Hemingway as ”i obscenity in the milk.”
